Poor drainage systems, coupled with improper waste disposal, frequently result in excessive flooding and water pooling. For Edna, the improvement of drainage systems in several areas of Brgy. West Crame provided relief for local residents and small vendors such as herself.
At the age of 67, Edna spends most of her time selling home-cooked meals and meriendas in front of their residence at Road 2. However, the clogged drainage in their area has been a long-standing concern as it interferes with their day-to-day activities, including their livelihood.
“‘Yung luma noon, barado, as in hindi nagfa-function… Problema talaga namin noon, inirereklamo namin ‘yung nasa unahan [dahil] ang dumi at tubig nila dito lahat [napupunta]. Nagtitinda kami ng ulam, eh may amoy yung bumababa. Ibig sabihin, hindi nagfa-function yung drainage,” Edna shared.
In 2022, the City of San Juan implemented a flood control project under the LGSF-FALGU, particularly, the repair of drainages and improvement of various streets situated in Brgy. West Crame.
“Sa totoo lang, maganda ang naging resulta ng [pagpapaayos ng] drainage kasi nabago… Wala nang baha... Maginhawa po kami. Wala nang ganung insidente na may bumababang tubig dito galing sa taas na may hindi magandang amoy,” Edna expressed.
